The cost of your residency will vary and is made up of two parts - Tuition and Accommodation which will vary according to the length of your residency and room choice.
Tuition - Includes use of the studio, tools and equipment

5 days -￥50000 7 days - ￥60000 15 days - ￥125,000 These are tuition days - not covering weekends. For example, 7 days tuition requies one weekend as well for a total of 9 days stay. |
| Longer Term |
After the first 15 days, a reduced amount for tuition can be applied, ￥6000 per day Maximum stay 10 weeks. Example 6 weeks (including 5 weekends): Intitial tuition 15 days ￥125,000 + following 15 days ￥90.000 = ￥215,000 plus accomodation costs for 42 nights* (eg dorm room total ￥126,000) |

If you are a mokuhanga practitioner, you might like the opportunity to stay and use a well equipped studio to develop new work, gaining inspiration from being in Japan. Accommodation daily costs and studio use of ¥3000 per day apply. We have a range of tools and materials to buy, and you can easily visit Tokyo for mokuhanga shopping! |

Accommodation - charge is per night
We have priced the accommodation to be similar to low cost backpacker / guesthouse elswhere in Japan. Actually accommodation in Karuizawa is considerably more expensive but we want you to have the same opportunity as other parts of Japan. so, the prices and facilities you get are a very good price.
You may require additional nights accommodation to cover weekend/s during the period of your residency, please check the calendar.

Private Tatami room - ￥5000 per night This is a 6 tatami mat room (2.6m x 3.5m), and has ample space, storage cupboards, sliding screens and shoji for privacy. It also has an external sliding door. Other accommodation - elsewhere in Karuizawa Karuizawa is generally expensive to stay, however these are options you might look at: Koya Backpackers - the only affordable / budget backpacker in Karuizawa area. Located in Naka-Karuizawa, 7 kilometers from our studio. Limited public transport is available. Hatagoya - motel style accomoodation 6 kilometers from our studio.

What is Mokuhanga?
Mokuhanga is the traditional water based printing technique, originating in China and perfected in Japan.
A print is created through design, carving blocks for each colour, then printing each colour successively until the print edition is completed.
Mokuhanga is the Japanese word for wood block print. The Japanese characters 木版画 are 木 wood, 版 block and 画 picture.
In Japan its meaning is the print itself, but in general contemporary use it means both the print and the technique. Mokuhanga is growing in popularity worldwide as learning becomes more accessible to people outside of Japan.
Mokuhanga is chemical free, non-toxic, environmentally friendly, uses relatively simple hand tools and equipment and requires little space to produce beautiful work. The natural beauty of the materials - wood, pigment and hand-made paper are all retained and enhance each other. A great choice for Artists or any creative person!
